WHAT IS A MICROGREEN?

green microgreens

A Microgreen is a young vibrant edible micro-plant that is harvested shortly after it germinates and presents its first true leaves, typically under 8 inches tall. For reference, I’d say they fall in between a sprout and a baby green in the developmental stage. Microgreens exhibit an intense flavor and have up to 40X more nutrition than their full-grown veggie counterparts. They contain vitamins, minerals, fiber, protein, micronutrients, and naturally occurring antioxidants. They are a Superfood!

Despite their accustomed smaller serving size, Microgreens support us in reaching our nutritional RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance) more efficiently each day than a full-grown vegetable would. They can be enjoyed either raw or cooked and compliment any meal! To benefit the health of our customers and lessen the footprint on the environment, Mad House Farms chooses to offer only one abundant container size that meets both of these needs.

NUTRITIONAL BENEFITS

Microgreens are not just a beautiful garnish they are Mother Nature’s multivitamins! The Microgreen seeds start their lives full of energy and nutrients with the intent of forming a substantial vegetable with immense leaves, flowers, stalks and root systems. However, because Microgreens are harvested within ~14 days after being planted, all those nutrients remain within the Microgreen. This is why they have up to 40X the amount of nutritional value of a full-grown veggie!

Knowing this, you can add a handful of Microgreens to ANYTHING you eat during the day and be assured that you are consuming a full day’s worth of vitamins and minerals. *Variety of nutrition is key to any diet. Mad House Farms sells numerous crops individually and in combination to benefit our customers’ health.

HOW TO EAT MICROGREENS

If choking down 5 cups of vegetables a day makes you cringe, Microgreens are your new best friend. The RDA of fruits and vegetables is 4 to 5 servings of each, per day. It can be very challenging to ingest this large quantity of food every day and there are so many examples of where we have all skipped eating correctly. Woke up late and missed breakfast. Workload overrides lunchtime, again. Grab toxic fast food to accommodate our busy lives with our friends, family, and ourselves. General loathing of vegetables that are rich in nutrients. Unfortunately, iceberg lettuce and Ranch don’t count as nutritious. My best friend says, “Ranch is the whipped cream for real food”, ha! Exhaustion at the end of the day to cook a healthy meal. The cost of quality foods and so many other reasons prohibit these essential vitamins and minerals from entering our bodies each day.

When these recommendations are not met daily, our bodies become malnourished, and we don’t function properly. We start feeling tired, weak, under the weather more often and it takes longer to bounce back. We have trouble concentrating, feel low, possibly depressed, and we can lose interest in eating and drinking all together! Fun little cycle, isn’t it?

By including one generous handful of Microgreens per day you can avoid this! Spread them throughout ALL your meals. Top your hamburger, toss them in your salad, mash them with your potatoes, garnish your pasta, sprinkle them on top of your pizza, quesadilla, or tacos. The list goes on. One handful a day is all it takes to keep you thriving!

MAD HOUSE CULTIVATING

FROM SEED TO SUPERFOOD

Mad House Farms is a hydroponic vertical Microgreens farm located in Meridian, Idaho. After extensive research we decided to cultivate our greens vertically to offer their health benefits to as many people in our community as possible. We always purchase organic seeds when available, our hydroponic system recycles the filtered water we use, and the seeds grow in an organic Coco Coir substrate. We have found that not all soil is created equally and with the coir we are able to control what the plants take in as they mature. Our system is regularly disinfected, and fully automated to control the environment and outcome of our Microgreen grow cycles. These practices guarantee a vibrant, healthy, nutritious product for you and your family with every harvest.
